Renewable Integration

As wind and solar energy adoption continues to grow, energy grids can be impacted by the intermittent nature of RE sources. Incorporating battery storage technology is the most cost-effective option for the safe and successful integration of renewables. Other benefits of renewable integration include the management of short-term variability on the power grid and a modernization of the grid.

Energy Shifting

Energy storage can be utilized to shift the peak generation from the PV system as energy demand fluctuates. It saves energy during periods when demand is low. Installed storage captures solar energy and allows local utilities to be more independent in their energy mix. Energy shifting enables organizations to get the maximum revenue from their PV generator, enabling higher DC/AC ratios for PV plants as well as time-variant grid injection.

• Sell energy at higher market price during peak periods (arbitrage)
• Supply electricity with a higher renewable proportion

Renewables' Curtailment Avoidance

RE Production may be curtailed by a grid operator for various reasons, such as increasing the stability of the network. At the same time, energy storage allows PV excess energy to be stored and delivered when needed.

Frequency Regulation System

Frequency regulation is known as one of the best methods for increasing grid stability:


Grid overfrequency (when generation is higher than demand)

Inverter power output is curtailed and energy is stored through charging batteries


Grid underfrequency (when generation is lower than demand)

Inverter power output is increased by discharging the batteries and injecting more power to the grid


Gas Peaker Replacement

Batteries are a good alternative when it comes to managing grid peaks and provide many benefits:

Transmission & Distribution Deferral

In light of rising EV demand globally, vertical integration across the battery value chain yields multi-fold competitive advantages in delivering a successful BESS product and flexible solutions. Trina Storage is ramping up battery manufacturing capacity to strengthen vertical integration, lower average cost through economies of scale as well as improve cell performance with better control over production process.

Driven by customer-demand and technological innovation, we are manufacturing safe, reliable and high-performance LFP cells, offering more transparency across the supply chain. These battery cells are produced in the Jiangsu Province, China. The cell manufacturing facility has a capacity of 3GWh annually to be scaled up to several GWh in near future. Trina Storage has also set up an integration base that enables a customizable BESS design with an annual capacity of 5GWh and a master plan of 45,000 sq meters in future.

With technological innovation at the forefront of product development strategy, Trina Storage has also built up an R&D centre by recruiting a highly educated and skilled talent pool with years of industry experience.

A good example is the case of SMS plc: the smart energy services provider engaged Trina Storage for the supply of an integrated 50MW grid-scale energy storage system in Burwell, Cambridgeshire – one of the first of its kind in the UK.

The full wrapped system solution, consisting of 157 PCS of battery racks (372 kWh), 15 PCS units (3.8 MVA), and 15 transformers units (3.8 MVA), maximizes system performance and extends battery life with safety at the heart of engineering process.

Challenges

Beyond compliance with UK Health & Safety regulations, the COVID-19 pandemic introduced further challenges surrounding testing, vaccinations, and site management. Furthermore, the small site footprint limited the space for storage and deliveries. And finally, challenges associated with the Brexit lead to a shortage in shipping capacity, demanding careful supply chain management to source the required components.

The Solution

After providing a comprehensive technical pre-sales consultancy, Trina Storage supported planning requirements. The company designed and supplied the full BESS (Battery Energy Storage Solution) according to the highest standards, with factory acceptance tests, commissioning, and site acceptance tests. The system can achieve a ramp rate of 100 MW/sec or higher, meeting the requirements of the Dynamic Containment Service in case of large generation or consumption drop-outs. Operational by the end of Q1 2022, the storage system is primarily deployed to provide balancing services to the UK’s national grid.
